Robert Mueller Diagnosed With Parkinson’s, House Withdraws Subpoena in Epstein Case

Yeshiva World News -

A House committee investigating the Justice Department’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case has withdrawn a subpoena to former FBI Director Robert Mueller, citing the state of his health. Mueller had been directed last month to appear before the House Oversight Committee on Tuesday for a deposition, but the subpoena was withdrawn after the panel learned of unspecified health issues that precluded him from being able to testify, according to a committee statement. The New York Times, citing a statement from Mueller’s family and people close to him, reported Sunday night that Mueller had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in the summer of 2021 and has had difficulty speaking. Mueller was appointed FBI director in 2001 by then-President George W. Bush and shepherded the bureau’s evolution into a national security and intelligence-gathering agency. He held the job for more than a decade, resigning in 2013. In 2017, he was tapped by the Justice Department to serve as special counsel in charge of the investigation into potential coordination between Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and Russia. His team over the course of the next two years revealed pervasive efforts by Russian operatives to interfere in the election on Trump’s behalf, and secured criminal charges and convictions against multiple Trump associates. But it did not find sufficient evidence to prove an illegal conspiracy between Moscow and the campaign to sway the election. Mueller has rarely spoken about the investigation since its conclusion but did testify before Congress in July 2019, an appearance that drew attention because of the sometimes stilted and halting manner of his testimony. Last month, Rep. James Comer of Kentucky, the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, issued subpoenas to Mueller and more than a half dozen other former law enforcement and government officials for testimony about their potential involvement in the years-long investigation into Epstein, the wealthy financier whose August 2019 death following his arrest on trafficking charges was determined to have been a suicide. Parkinson’s is a neurologic disease that robs people of control over their movements. It typically starts with tremors and is characterized by slow movement, a shuffling gait, stiff limbs, balance problems and slurred speech. Though there is no cure, there are treatments. (AP)

Trump Told Me ‘Forget Partial Deals, Go In With Full Force,’ Netanyahu Tells Security Cabinet

Matzav -

Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu reaffirmed night that he rejects any proposal for a partial Gaza hostage agreement, making his position clear during a lengthy security cabinet meeting focused on Israel’s ongoing military operation to seize control of Gaza City. Outside the IDF headquarters in Tel Aviv, families of hostages staged protests, urging the government to pursue a deal.

During the meeting, Netanyahu informed the cabinet that the U.S. administration shares his opposition to a limited agreement. “Forget the partial deals. Go in with full force. Finish it,” Netanyahu quoted U.S. President Donald Trump as saying. He further warned that Israel’s “window of legitimacy” from the international community is narrow, and halting operations for a partial deal would undermine the objective of eliminating Hamas.

“Our impression is that Netanyahu’s opposition is genuine. He will not agree to a partial deal,” several ministers said following the meeting.

The discussion primarily revolved around the IDF’s strategy for fully capturing Gaza City, with top military officials presenting detailed operational plans. A senior Israeli source had earlier told The Jerusalem Post that the cabinet’s session would not be focused on debating whether or not to pursue a partial deal.

IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir issued a warning to the cabinet during the session, saying, “You are heading toward military rule. Understand the implications.”

Cabinet Secretary Yossi Fuchs immediately disputed that assessment, responding, “That’s not true.”

National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir offered an alternative approach, suggesting: “Instead of military rule, we can encourage voluntary emigration.”

When Zamir repeated his warning about the risks of imposing direct military governance in Gaza, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich cut in sharply, declaring, “We have made a decision.”

The meeting, which lasted nearly six hours, also saw Ben-Gvir push for a formal vote on a statement rejecting any possibility of a partial deal. Netanyahu refused to allow it, responding, “That’s irrelevant — we are only going for a full deal. We need to defeat Hamas.”

While the majority of ministers echoed Netanyahu’s stance, a smaller group voiced support for considering a limited agreement. Among them were Intelligence Minister Gila Gamliel and Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, who pointed to Israel’s growing diplomatic challenges and mounting international calls at the United Nations for unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state as reasons to reconsider.

Several of Israel’s top security chiefs — including Zamir, acting Shin Bet director “S,” and Mossad director David Barnea — backed the idea of a partial arrangement. However, Deputy Chief of Staff Maj.-Gen. Tamir Yadai argued firmly that Hamas would only surrender under conditions of complete military defeat, regardless of the cost.

“I hear your positions, but ultimately, I decide — and you must fall in line,” Netanyahu told the gathered ministers and security officials, making clear where the final authority lies.

After the meeting, officials told The Jerusalem Post that even cabinet hardliners, such as Smotrich and National Missions Minister Orit Strock, were convinced that Netanyahu had fully ruled out the possibility of a limited deal. “Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz have fully internalized the principles and arguments against a partial deal, and have become the most effective advocates for the approach of ‘decisive victory in Gaza, without stopping for a partial deal.’”

Given the strong resistance within the cabinet to a limited arrangement, Zamir closed the meeting by stating: “Whatever the Cabinet decides, the army will execute it with excellence.”

The meeting concluded at around 1:45 a.m. Monday morning. Notably, Maj.-Gen. (res.) Nitzan Alon, head of the IDF’s Hostages Directorate, was excluded from the session because the agenda did not involve direct negotiations for a hostage agreement.

Meanwhile, outside the IDF headquarters, families of hostages continued their protests, urging Netanyahu and the cabinet to act decisively to secure the captives’ release.

“Your refusal to discuss the details of the deal currently on the negotiation table represents an irreversible loss,” a statement from the families said.

“Sit down at the negotiating table now and don’t get up until a viable agreement is reached for the return of every last hostage.”

Einav Zangauker, the mother of hostage Matan Zangauker, expressed her frustration directly: “What exactly is this Cabinet convening for? I really want to ask you, Benjamin Netanyahu. Your Cabinet members boast — they actually boast — about thwarting deals that were on the table.”

“Now there is a deal on the table. Instead of taking it and leveraging it into a comprehensive agreement that would guarantee the return of the hostages — both the living and the deceased — and end the war, what are you convening for now?”

Israel’s High Court Unanimously Moves to Block Government Firing of Attorney General Baharav-Miara

Yeshiva World News -

The High Court of Justice on Monday issued a unanimous recommendation that the government cancel its dismissal of Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara and abandon the controversial new process it approved in June to facilitate her firing. The nine-judge panel, which includes a majority of conservative justices, advised the government to revert to the long-standing procedure established in 2000, under which the appointment and dismissal of an attorney general must go through a public, professional committee. The court gave the government until September 14 to confirm whether it will abolish the new method and reinstate Baharav-Miara. If the government refuses, it must submit affidavits by October 30, after which the court is expected to issue a binding final ruling. Monday’s decision also canceled a scheduled hearing on petitions challenging her dismissal. The ruling underscores the court’s view that the government’s mid-process decision to alter the rules for dismissing an attorney general is legally untenable. The court noted that the government failed to file a defense against the petitions—an “extraordinary” omission—and that no justification had been provided for deviating from established procedures. Justice Minister Yariv Levin lashed out at the decision, calling it a “theater of the absurd” and suggesting the government would not comply with any final ruling. “You can’t force the government, especially when we’re in the midst of a war, to work with her even for one more day,” Levin said. “The government and only the government will determine who its attorney general will be.” Communications Minister Shlomo Karchi went further, declaring the High Court’s injunction “illegal and therefore void,” and vowing the government would push ahead in appointing a new attorney general. The clash leaves Israel in uncharted constitutional territory, with the High Court insisting that Baharav-Miara’s firing cannot stand and the government signaling it may openly defy the judiciary. HaGaon HaRav Shternbuch Urges Bochur to Refuse IDF Draft, Calls Army “Liars and Resha’im”

Yeshiva World News -

WATCH: HaGaon HaRav Moshe Shternbuch, shlita, to a Yeshiva Bochur being pursued by the IDF military police: “One must have true mesiras nefesh. Over there, one becomes corrupted immediately — they are liars and cursed resha’im.” When the bochur asked if he should be afraid of them, Rav Shternbuch replied: “Absolutely not. Tell them you spoke with HaRav Shternbuch, who has forbidden you from going to the army.”

Jewish Teen Assaulted Outside Lyon Shul Amid Rising Wave of Antisemitic Violence in France

Yeshiva World News -

A 14-year-old Jewish boy was attacked outside a shul in Lyon, France, last week in what prosecutors are investigating as an antisemitic assault. The assault occurred on August 22, when the boy was approached by a man in his 20s while walking home alone. According to the victim’s father, the assailant asked if the boy smoked, then hurled antisemitic insults before kicking him in the hip. The teenager required medical treatment and was given two days of leave for his injuries, Libération reported. Lyon prosecutor Thierry Dran confirmed the case is being investigated as “aggravated violence against a minor due to religious affiliation.” No arrests have been made. Lyon Mayor Grégory Doucet said he was “deeply shocked” by the assault. “As mayor and as a citizen, I condemn with the greatest firmness these antisemitic acts,” Doucet said, vowing that perpetrators must be “identified and punished with the full force of the law.” The city will also replant a tree in memory of Ilan Halimi – a French-Jewish man tortured and murdered in 2006 in a ransom plot motivated by antisemitism – which was attacked and destroyed in a separate recent antisemitic incident. The latest attack comes amid escalating tensions between Paris, Jerusalem, and Washington over France’s plan to recognize a Palestinian state next month. Jewish leaders have warned that anti-Israel rhetoric from French political parties is fueling violence on the streets. Yonathan Arfi, president of the CRIF umbrella group of French Jewish communities, blasted the government’s statehood push, warning it was emboldening extremist movements like La France Insoumise (LFI), a far-left party accused of normalizing antisemitic rhetoric. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently accused President Emmanuel Macron of contributing to antisemitism by advancing recognition of Palestinian statehood. Macron fired back, charging Netanyahu with “weaponizing antisemitism” while insisting that Israel’s actions in Gaza and the West Bank provide “a pretext for antisemitism” worldwide. U.S. Ambassador to France Charles Kushner issued a public rebuke of Macron’s government, warning that antisemitic assaults, synagogue vandalism, and attacks on Jewish-owned businesses in France occur “nearly every day.” France recorded 1,570 antisemitic incidents in 2024, one of the highest totals on record, according to the SPCJ Jewish security service. That included 106 physical assaults, the most in over a decade. Jewish security watchdog BNVCA has noted that most of the attacks are carried out by individuals from Muslim backgrounds. IDF To Begin Call Up Of 60,000 More Reservists On Tuesday As Gaza City Offensive Looms

Yeshiva World News -

The IDF will begin mobilizing 60,000 reservists on Tuesday in one of the largest call-ups of the war, as the military shifts its weight toward Gaza ahead of a planned ground offensive on Gaza City. According to the IDF, the majority of the new reservists — between 40,000 and 50,000 — are scheduled to report for duty on September 2. Two additional waves are planned in the coming months: one in November–December and another in February–March 2026. The new deployment adds to the tens of thousands of reservists already in uniform, marking a dramatic expansion of Israel’s war footing. Military officials confirmed that roughly 20,000 reservists currently serving will have their tours extended by 30 to 40 days. In total, the IDF expects to have around 130,000 reservists active at the height of the offensive. The mobilization underscores Israel’s preparations for a major push into Gaza City, where military planners say Hamas’s last organized forces remain entrenched. (YWN World Headquarters – NYC)

Passuk From The Parsha Sparks Heated Dispute In Security Cabinet Meeting

Yeshiva World News -

An unusual clash took place at the security cabinet meeting on Sunday night between Settlements Minister Orit Strock and IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir during the discussion on the expansion of the military operation in Gaza, Kan News reported. According to the report, Strock quoted the passuk from Parshas Shoftim: “And whoever is fearful and fainthearted, let him go and return to his house, lest he make the heart of his brothers faint like his own.” She then added, “They are trying to intimidate us; they are trying to frighten us with all sorts of scare tactics.” Likud Minister Gila Gamliel asked who was trying to intimidate, and Strock replied, hinting that she meant the army, “I hesitated whether to say it and decided to say it anyway.” Strock later explained that she did not mean the word “fearful” but the idea of “making the heart of his brothers melt,” asserting that a concentrated effort was being made “to melt the hearts of the Cabinet members so that they would retreat from an existing decision to take over Gaza and defeat Hamas.” IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, who has aligned with the left since entering his position and has clashed with the government on many of its war plans, responded sharply, saying that he’s here for “two missions of my life—preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and destroying Hamas.” When Strock again quoted “whoever is fearful and fainthearted,” Zamir raised his voice and said, “I recommended taking action against Iran. The map of the Middle East faces me every morning, and I approve attacks everywhere. No one is fearful and fainthearted, including the generals here.” “I make powerful decisions that no one has made. I present to you the significance and implications of everything. If you want blind obedience, bring someone else!” Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu then intervened, saying, “I’m not interested in blind obedience, and I also don’t want an alteration of our plan.” Another issue that came up at the meeting was a possible framework for a hostage deal, with National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir asking to hold a vote confirming that there would be no partial deal. Netanyahu responded that “a partial deal is not relevant” and there was no need for a vote. However, although no vote took place, there was a majority among the ministers that a partial deal with Hamas should not be pursued. Despite this fact and the prime minister’s position that the issue of a partial deal was not on the agenda, Zamir expressed support for it, claiming, “There is a framework on the table; we need to take it.” He also asserted that Operation Gideon’s Chariots, deemed an abysmal failure by an internal IDF review, created the conditions for the return of hostages. Strock expressed opposition to an overly cautious combat approach in areas where hostages are thought to be located: “There must be no ‘do not touch me’ areas in Gaza because this endangers the residents of the Gaza border area and all the residents of the south,” she said. “In order to win the war, we must take over these areas as well and not leave them as terror bubbles above and below ground.” She asserted that although strenuous efforts should be made to prevent harm to […]

IDF Kills Dozens of Terrorists, Destroys 5 Miles of Tunnels In Khan Yunis

Matzav -

Israeli forces fighting in southern Gaza’s Khan Yunis over the past few months have killed dozens of terrorists, including those who participated in the Oct. 7, 2023, massacre, and destroyed five miles (eight kilometers) of terror tunnels, the IDF said on Monday.

The Kfir Infantry Brigade’s combat team, operating under the command of the 36th Armored Division, also destroyed Hamas “military” infrastructure, uncovered and neutralized large amounts of weaponry and advanced the establishment of the Magen Oz Corridor, designed to separate eastern and western Khan Yunis.

Golani Infantry Brigade troops are also operating in Khan Yunis. The unit’s commander, Col. Adi Ganon, addressed soldiers on Sunday to mark the start of the school year on Monday.

“Five months of maneuvers in Rafah and Khan Yunis. A long way remains ahead of us. In contrast, the Israeli students are at home, preparing their bags for school, filling their bottles with water, buying rolls for their morning sandwich, taking a hot shower,” the colonel said.

“They will go to sleep excited. Tomorrow, they will wake up, put on a white shirt, and happily go to school. If you are looking for a reason why you’re here today—here it is. Thanks to your spirit and way, dear Golani soldiers and IDF troops in all sectors, the people of Israel are in routine.”

Israeli forces are continuing to located and dismantle terrorist infrastructure in northern Gaza as well. Over the past 24 hours, the IDF said that artillery struck several terrorist infrastructure and observation posts that were used by terrorists to observe troops. In addition, soldiers struck a structure that was used to fire an anti-tank missile at troops; no injuries were reported.

Artillery troops also dismantled a camera that was used by terrorists to observe troops.

Furthermore, over the past week, IDF troops operating in Jabalia killed terrorists and dismantled underground infrastructure and explosive sites.

The northern Gaza activities come ahead of a major operation in one of the last Hamas strongholds, Gaza City. JNS

Germany’s Merz: Ukraine War Could Last ‘a Long Time,’ Capitulation Not an Option

Yeshiva World News -

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Sunday that the war in Ukraine could still last for a long time and ending it quickly at the country’s expense was not an option. In an interview with German public broadcaster ZDF, Merz, when asked whether a ceasefire might be possible this year, said he hasn’t lost hope but “harbors no illusions,” and emphasized that supporting the country to defend itself against Russia was an “absolute priority.” “We are trying to end it as quickly as possible. But certainly not at the price of Ukraine’s capitulation. You could end the war tomorrow if Ukraine surrendered and lost its independence,” Merz said. “Then the next country would be at risk the day after tomorrow. And the day after that, it would be us. That is not an option,” the chancellor said. Germany is a key backer of Ukraine and has delivered or pledged military support worth around 40 billion euros ($47 billion) since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022. (AP)

Petirah of Vizhnitzer Kiamesha Rebbetzin a”h, Daughter of Late Rachmastrivka Rebbe zt”l

Matzav -

The Viznitz and Rachmastrivka communities, along with the broader chassidic world, were struck by profound sorrow this morning upon learning of the passing of Rebbetzin Feiga Shifra Hager a”h, the beloved Viznitzer Kiamesha Rebbetzin and daughter of the late Rachmastrivka Rebbe zt”l. She was seventy years old and had been facing health challenges for several months.

Born in New Square, the Rebbetzin grew up in the shadow of greatness, as her father, the Rachmastrivka Rebbe, was living there at the time. Her formative years were deeply influenced by the spiritual warmth and holiness surrounding the home of her esteemed grandfather, the previous Skverer Rebbe. From an early age, she absorbed an atmosphere of purity and dedication to avodas Hashem that would define her life’s path.

She later married the Viznitz-Kiamesha Rebbe, the third son of the Toras Mordechai of Viznitz-Monsey. Together, they built a home of kedusha and raised generations devoted to Torah and avodah. The Rebbetzin stood faithfully at her husband’s side, serving as a true eizer k’negdo and playing an integral role in supporting his tireless avodas hakodesh. Her influence extended beyond her immediate family, as she became a source of warmth and guidance to the chassidim of Kiamesha, embodying the role of a nurturing and devoted matriarch.

The news of her passing has plunged her children into deep mourning, as well as her brothers, the Admorim of Rachmastrivka. Among them is the Rachmastrivka Rebbe of Oak and Vine in Lakewood, who, despite the grief, is scheduled to marry off a child in New Square this evening.

The Rebbetzin’s legacy will endure as one of extraordinary dedication, modesty, and mesirus nefesh. She was instrumental in shaping the thriving chassidic community of Kiamesha, pouring her heart into its growth and spiritual vibrancy. Her kindness, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to others left an indelible mark on all who knew her.

The levaye is scheduled to take place this afternoon in Boro Park, outside the home of the Rachmastrivka Rebbetzin on 45th Street, beginning around 2:00 p.m. Following that, the levaye will continue to Monsey, with a stop at the Viznitzer Bais Medrash, and the kevurah will take place in the Viznitzer Beis Hachaim.

SWEET JUSTICE: Gaza Flotilla with Greta Thunberg Forced Back By Storms

Matzav -

A Gaza-bound flotilla of dozens of boats, including one carrying Swedish anti-Israel activist Greta Thunberg, was forced to turn back to port in Barcelona due to stormy weather, organizers said on Monday.

The Global Sumud (“steadfastness” in Arabic) Flotilla posted a statement to its Telegram channel that mission departure was “delayed to prioritize safety amid strong Mediterranean winds.”

“We conducted a sea trial and then returned to port to allow the storm to pass. This meant delaying our departure to avoid risking complications with the smaller boats,” adding that the vessels were facing 30 knot winds (35 mph, or 56 kph).

The organizers did not say when the journey would resume.

Thunberg and hundreds of other anti-Israel activists departed from Spain and other countries on Sunday, in what Reuters described as the largest Gaza flotilla to date, in an attempt to break Israel’s blockade of the Strip.

It is the second protest flotilla for the Swedish climate activist, who has pivoted to anti-Israel extremism since the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023. She is joined by far-left Portuguese parliamentarian Mariana Mortágua, Irish actor Liam Cunningham, who has supported a cultural boycott of the Jewish state, and activists from 44 countries, who departed from Barcelona, Sicily, Greece and Tunisia.

The Global Sumud Flotilla is described by the Barcelona Radical Book Fair, which broadcasted the departure live, as “history’s largest international civil humanitarian movement to break the siege on Gaza, open a maritime humanitarian corridor and denounce the genocide against the Palestinians.”

A restricted meeting was held Sunday at the official residence of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem to discuss operational strategy against the more than 200 people participating in the flotilla. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and security personnel participated.

Ben-Gvir propose to Netanyahu tougher measures as part of a deterrent strategy to prevent future flotillas. This strategy was reportedly formulated at a preparatory meeting hosted by the minister on Aug. 28 with top police and Prison Service personnel.

The strategy includes “detaining the activists in terrorist-level conditions at Ktzi’ot and Damon (for females) facilities—lacking television or radio, without superior-quality meals, and involving prolonged custody rather than merely overnight,” Israel Hayom reported.

“The foundation for custody in these conditions, it was stated during the meeting, is their arrival to violate a restricted military area, plus creating documentation on each individual using photographs with terrorists and links to terror groups,” the report continued.

In addition, under the proposal, Israel will seize the vessels and turn them into police assets to establish a maritime force for police operations, which a judicial assessment has already shown would allow seizure of these types of boats.

Israel Hayom cited sources close to Ben-Gvir as saying that the “gentle” handling of previous protest flotillas failed to deter activists from trying again. The sources added that if the strategy is approved, “following several weeks at Ktzi’ot and Damon, they’ll be sorry about the time they arrived here. We must eliminate their appetite for another attempt.”

In June, Thunberg was detained by the Israeli Navy during an attempt to reach Gaza aboard the Madleen, and subsequently deported.

Of the 12 people aboard the Madleen, four, including Thunberg, agreed to be deported from Israel voluntarily, while all were banned from the Jewish state for 100 years, according to their attorneys.

Upon touching down at Charles de Gaulle Airport near Paris, Thunberg held a press conference in which she claimed she had been “kidnapped” by Israel.

The Israel Defense Forces Spokesperson’s Unit told JNS on Aug. 11 that the military “enforces the security naval blockade on the Gaza Strip and is prepared for a wide range of scenarios, which it will act upon in accordance with the directives of the political echelon.” JNS

Trump Threatens Tariffs Up to 200% on Imported Pharmaceuticals

Yeshiva World News -

President Donald Trump has plastered tariffs on products from almost every country on earth. He’s targeted specific imports including autos, steel and aluminum. But he isn’t done yet. Trump has promised to impose hefty import taxes on pharmaceuticals, a category of products he’s largely spared in his trade war. For decades, in fact, imported medicine has mostly been allowed to enter the United States duty free. That’s starting to change. U.S. and European leaders recently detailed a trade deal that includes a 15% tariff rate on some European goods brought into the United States, including pharmaceuticals. Trump is threatening duties of 200% more on drugs made elsewhere. “Shock and awe’’ is how Maytee Pereira of the tax and consulting firm PwC describes Trump’s plans for drugmakers. “This is an industry that’s going from zero (tariffs) to the potentiality of 200%.’’ Trump has promised Americans he’ll lower their drug costs. But imposing stiff pharmaceutical tariffs risks the opposite and could disrupt complex supply chains, drive cheap foreign-made generic drugs out of the U.S. market and create shortages. “A tariff would hurt consumers most of all, as they would feel the inflationary effect … directly when paying for prescriptions at the pharmacy and indirectly through higher insurance premiums,’’ Diederik Stadig, a healthcare economist with the financial services firm ING, wrote in a commentary last month, adding that lower-income households and the elderly would feel the greatest impact. The threat comes as Trump also pressures drugmakers to lower prices in the United States. He recently sent letters to several companies telling them to develop a plan to start offering so-called most-favored nation pricing here. But Trump has said he’d delay the tariffs for a year or a year and a half, giving companies a chance to stockpile medicine and shift manufacturing to the United States — something some have already begun to do. Leerink Partners analyst David Risinger said in a July 29 note that most drugmakers have already increased drug product imports and may carry between six and 18 months of inventory in the U.S. Jefferies analyst David Windley said in a recent research note that tariffs that don’t kick in until the back half of 2026 may not be felt until 2027 or 2028 due to stockpiling. Moreover, many analysts suspect Trump will settle for a tariff far lower than 200%. They also are waiting to see whether any tariff policy includes an exemption for certain products like low-margin generic drugs. Still, Stadig says, even a 25% levy would gradually raise U.S. drug prices by 10% to 14% as the stockpiles dwindle. In recent decades, drugmakers have moved many operations overseas – to take advantage of lower costs in China and India and tax breaks in Ireland and Switzerland. As a result, the U.S. trade deficit in medicinal and pharmaceutical products is big — nearly $150 billion last year. The COVID-19 experience – when countries were desperate to hang onto their own medicine and medical supplies — underscored the dangers of relying on foreign countries in a crisis, especially when a key supplier is America’s geopolitical rival China. In April, the administration started investigating how importing drugs and pharmaceutical ingredients affects national security. Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 permits the president to order tariffs for the sake […]
