IDF troops from the Northern Brigade, operating under the 252nd Division, recently destroyed a 1.2-kilometer-long, 20-meter-deep tunnel in the northern Gaza Strip, with the elite Yahalom combat engineering unit carrying out the demolition.
In the past 48 hours, the IDF struck over 90 targets in the Gaza Strip, including a Hamas command center with a weapons depot in Gaza City’s Daraj and Tuffah neighborhoods, a rocket launching site used to attack southern Israel, and other Hamas infrastructure, weapon depots, and operative cells.
The IDF says it targeted a Hamas command center embedded within the Al-Ahli hospital in Gaza City. The military says the compound was used by Hamas operatives to plan and carry out attacks on Israel and IDF troops.
The IDF announces that it has completed capturing the Morag Corridor in the southern Gaza Strip, cutting off the city of Rafah from Khan Younis. Rafah is now completely surrounded by the military, with the 36th Division holding the Morag Corridor, and the Gaza Division operating in the Philadelphi Corridor, the Egypt-Gaza border area.
A recent ceasefire proposal presented by Egypt to Hamas has reportedly failed to make headway, according to a senior Hamas official cited by Qatar’s Al Jazeera network. The proposal, delivered to the Hamas delegation during their visit to Cairo in recent days, outlined a 45-day ceasefire in Gaza, during which half of the 59 remaining hostages would be released in the first week. The remainder — including both living captives and the bodies of deceased hostages — would be handed over on the 45th day. The Egyptian-mediated proposal included a stipulation that any agreement to end the war would require negotiations on the disarmament of Hamas. The senior terror official said the group firmly rejected that condition, asserting that disarmament is non-negotiable and that Hamas would only consider an agreement centered on a permanent end to the war, not on surrendering its weapons. In a further development, Arabic-language media reported that the Hamas delegation, which had been in Cairo since Friday, has since departed, casting additional doubt on the prospects for a near-term truce. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, a prominent Jew and Democratic leader, narrowly escaped an attempted murder early Sunday morning when an arsonist set fire to the Governor’s Residence in Harrisburg. The attack, which took place just hours after Shapiro and his family celebrated the first seder of Pesach, has been described by authorities as a “targeted” act of political violence. A suspect, identified as Cody Balmer, 38, of Harrisburg, has been arrested and charged with attempted murder, terrorism, aggravated arson, and other serious offenses. The incident unfolded around 2 a.m., when Shapiro, his wife Lori, their four children—Sophia, Jonah, Max, and Reuben—and several guests were sleeping in the historic Georgian-style mansion. According to court documents, Balmer scaled an iron security fence, eluded state troopers, and broke into the residence through a southern wing, a room often used for parties and art displays. Carrying homemade incendiary devices, including Molotov cocktails and Heineken bottles filled with gasoline, he ignited fires in multiple rooms, including the piano room and dining area, causing significant damage estimated to be in the millions of dollars. The residence, built in 1968, lacks sprinklers, which allowed the flames to spread rapidly. A state trooper’s urgent banging on the governor’s door woke the family, and all were safely evacuated without injury. “We were sleeping, and suddenly we hear this pounding, like a gevald,” Shapiro recounted at a press conference later that day. “The troopers got us out, and we’re all okay, but it’s a sobering reminder of how far some will go to harm others.” Balmer, who turned himself in to Pennsylvania State Police hours after the attack, allegedly admitted to “harboring hatred” toward Shapiro and expressed intent to harm him physically. According to a criminal affidavit, he told investigators he carried a small sledgehammer and would have “beaten the governor” had they crossed paths. Authorities have not yet released a definitive motive, but the timing—mere hours after Shapiro hosted a Pesach seder—has raised suspicions about possible antisemitic undertones. The FBI is assisting in the investigation, with particular attention to whether the attack was fueled by anti-Jewish sentiment, especially given Balmer’s history of posting anti-government sentiments and violent memes on social media. Shapiro, who rose to national prominence as a potential running mate for Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election, addressed the attack with characteristic resolve. Speaking outside the charred remains of the mansion on Sunday, he drew on the themes of Pesach. “Last night, in the state dining room, we told the story of going from slavery to freedom,” he said. “I refuse to be trapped by the shackles someone tries to put on me or my family through this kind of evil. I won’t let it stop me from doing the work I love or proudly celebrating our Jewishness.” The attack has drawn widespread condemnation, including from President Donald Trump, who called it “inexcusable” and urged an end to political violence. Vice President JD Vance described the incident as “really disgusting,” while former Governor Mark Schweiker praised Shapiro’s leadership in the face of adversity. The incident is the latest in a disturbing string of attacks on elected officials in the United States, including the 2022 assault on Nancy Pelosi’s husband and last year’s assassination attempts on Trump during his campaign. Balmer, who was denied bail at his […]
There is so much currently happening on the political scene in Eretz Yisroel. Aside from the burning issue of the hostages and the ongoing war in Gaza, there is an entire ruckus over the dismissal of the head of the Shin Bet among other issues.
The Gedolei Yisroel and the Charedi community, as a whole, are very worried and disturbed over the ongoing efforts to try drafting bnei yeshivos.
Much effort has been expended both publicly and through quiet diplomacy to try dissuading the powers that be and those in the legal system from their attempt to curb the koach of today’s “Shevet Levi”. After all, in this fraught period, Klal Yisroel, more than ever, needs the zechusim of limud haTorah to enable us to overcome our enemies.
The Gedolei Yisroel have been focusing on explaining the Charedi position, hoping to impress upon influential figures in the government and the legal community a better understanding of the the role that Torah learning plays in ensuring the future of the country.
Recently, the Nasi of Dirshu, Rav Dovid Hofstedter was in Eretz Yisroel. As a prominent resident of chutz la’aretz who leads the largest Torah organization in the world, Rav Hofstedter has been involved in the hishtadlus effort. Rav Hofstedter held numerous meetings at the homes of several senior Gedolei Yisroel. The Gedolei Yisroel all urged him to use his influence to try finding common ground with decision- makers in Eretz Yisroel regarding this difficult, critically important issue.
As a prominent figure in the diaspora, Rav Hofstedter also conversed with Mr. Yitzchak Herzog, the President of Israel. Rav Hofstedter discussed the underpinnings of the Charedi outlook regarding limud haTorah and the fact that the avreichim who devote their days and nights to learning do so most altruistically, forgoing many of life’s comforts and living extremely frugally so that they can continue to learn Torah. Rav Hofstedter spoke about the value of Torah learning and its exalted role in shielding and preserving those living in Israel, and Judaism as a whole.
President Herzog was very receptive to Rav Hofstedter’s words and commented that despite the incitement that we are witnessing in some quarters, he had, in general, noticed that the secular and traditional Jews in Eretz Yisroel have strengthened themselves in observance and recognizing the integral role that Torah has in the lives of the Jewish People.
“Without a doubt, the secret of the survival of the Jewish people throughout the ages has been the role played by the Torah. I feel that the Torah is what unifies us as a people and serves as our spiritual backbone.” Herzog told Rav Hofstedter that in a telephone conversation with Rav Moshe Hillel Hirsch, Rosh Yeshivas Slabodka, he had expressed similar sentiments. President Herzog concluded, “I join together with you in calling on all parties to lower the temperature, cease with the incitement, and coalesce around what unites us, not what divides us.”

Leftist protesters held a “chometz protest” outside the home of Environmental Protection Minister Idit Silman (Likud) on Monday morning, the first day of Chol HaMoed in Israel, spreading dozens of pitas outside her home. The leftists, who engaged in the same type of anti-religious protests before October 7, feigned concern over the hostages by tying the protest to their plight, writing “one pita a day” with the pitas as a reference to the starvation rations the hostages receive in Gaza. Silman, formerly a Yamina MK, brought down the Bennett-Lapid government three years ago over the Health Minister’s order to allow chometz into hospitals on Pesach in violation of Israel’s religious status quo. Silman responded to the provocation by stating: “Pesach, a street with mostly religious and mesorati people. These scum come have come to spread pitas on the street., It’s not for the sake of the hostages, it’s not for the sake of democracy, it’s not even for politics.” “It’s only because they are despicable people who lack basic human values. Zero consideration for others, zero respect for Judaism, and zero culture. Absolute zeros. The vast majority of the Am is disgusted by them. Chag Sameach!” (YWN’s Jerusalem desk is keeping you updated on the first day of Chol HaMoed in Israel)
