Rishon L’Tzion Rav Dovid Yosef Responds Sharply: “I Am Responsible – No Unfit Dayan Will Be Appointed”

Matzav -

The nosi of the Great Rabbinical Court, Rishon L’Tzion Rav Dovid Yosef, issued a forceful rebuttal on Sunday evening following allegations raised earlier by Rav Kalman Ber regarding political interference in the appointment of dayanim. Rav Yosef firmly rejected the claims of improper influence and emphasized his personal responsibility for all judicial appointments.

“If someone feels threatened, let them say so,” declared Rav Yosef in a public statement. “I am the President of the Great Rabbinical Court and I personally take full responsibility for every appointment. No unworthy dayan will be appointed to the Great Rabbinical Court … I guarantee that. I am familiar with the rulings of every candidate, and I have thoroughly studied the character of each one. These are individuals of outstanding caliber.”

The controversy erupted earlier in the day after recordings were released in which Rav Kalman Ber claimed that appointments to the Great Rabbinical Court had been made under political pressure, and even threats, allegedly from Finance Minister Betzalel Smotrich. In response, new recordings emerged of Rav Yosef speaking at a judicial appointments committee meeting, where he categorically dismissed the accusations.

During his remarks, Rav Yosef detailed the seven candidates he supports for promotion, praising their qualifications, scholarship, and judicial records:

  • Rav Avraham Shalosh, Raavad of Haifa – “A brilliant young talmid chacham, appointed temporarily purely on merit.”

  • Rav Dovid Berdugo, dayan in Yerushalayim – “28 years of judicial experience, with unique contributions to halachic rulings.”

  • Rav Tzvi Yehuda Ben Yaakov – “Among the most senior dayanim, already served a temporary term on the Supreme Rabbinical Court.”

  • Rav Shneur Pardes, Raavad of Netanya – “A powerhouse in Torah, known for his precise rulings that have stood up on appeal.”

  • Rav Meir Freiman, Av Beis Din of Yerushalayim – “I met him only recently, but he has proven to be one of the most outstanding dayanim.”

  • Rav Yigal Lerer – “A veteran in the system, whose Torah greatness is exceptional.”

  • Rav Moshe Amsalem – “A true reformer in the dayanus world. His judgment is particularly impressive.”

In addition, MK Penina Tamano-Shata, who was mentioned in the leaked recordings as someone who allegedly faced political threats, also dismissed the claims. “There were no threats. If someone feels threatened, they should speak up,” she said.

Regarding Rav Kalman Ber’s assertion that the Dati Leumi community was not consulted during the process, officials involved in the rabbinic appointments deal stressed that the moves were coordinated with leading rabbinic figures. Among them were Rav Yaakov Shapiro, Rosh Yeshiva of Mercaz HaRav and a senior figure in the religious Zionist Torah world, as well as numerous other prominent rabbanim and dayanim.

Construction Firm Says Yehud Remains Removed Under Halachic Supervision

Matzav -

Aura, a real estate development firm, confirmed to Arutz Sheva–Israel National News that human remains were extracted from one of its construction sites in Yehud, located in central Israel. The company emphasized that the removal was conducted in strict accordance with halacha (Jewish law) and under the guidance of an Orthodox rabbi with expertise in these matters.

This acknowledgment followed a decision by the Israel Antiquities Authority to file a complaint with the police and freeze construction activities. The suspension came after unauthorized individuals entered the site during the night, removed human remains, and took archaeological artifacts—an act considered a serious breach of Israeli law.

The Antiquities Authority reported that those involved were acting on behalf of Aura. It expressed deep concern over the incident, declaring, “The Antiquities Authority sees this incident with great severity. Antiquities are the heritage of us all.”

The disputed project is part of a major redevelopment initiative in Yehud involving the demolition of ten aging buildings and the planned construction of 444 new residential units. For weeks, radical chareidi demonstrators have protested at the site, alleging the presence of Jewish graves beneath the area designated for development.

In response to the Antiquities Authority’s actions, Aura rejected the legality of the stop-work order, calling it an unjustified concession to extremists. The company insisted it had complied fully with the terms set by the authority and pointed out that the bones discovered did not meet the legal criteria to be defined as antiquities, thereby rendering the order invalid in their view.

Aura further claimed that the halt in construction has inflicted significant financial losses and accused the Antiquities Authority of failing to honor its commitments. The company warned that if the construction ban is not lifted, it will consider taking legal measures.

The company confirmed that human remains were found at the site, explaining, “Since the remains were not removed, and in order to avoid further delays to the construction and to ensure the respectful handling of the remains in accordance with halacha, our company engaged a recognized Orthodox rabbi and a professional experienced in this field, including with the ZAKA organization. Indeed, on Friday and Saturday night, work began to remove the remains, with coordination as required with the Chevra Kadisha to ensure burial in a recognized cemetery according to halachic law. It should be noted that our company even purchased burial plots for this purpose. All actions were carried out according to the professional guidance of the rabbi and the expert present on site.”

Tensions escalated further late Thursday night when dozens of chareidi rioters stormed the homes of Aura’s senior executives in Tel Aviv. They vandalized property, hurled bags of excrement, and physically assaulted members of CEO Yaakov Atrakchi’s family. The deputy CEO’s home was also targeted with similar acts of destruction.

Aura denounced these attacks as “a dangerous escalation” and revealed that only a week earlier, the graves of Atrakchi’s parents had been desecrated. The company also criticized law enforcement, claiming the police had received prior warnings about the planned assaults but failed to intervene.

European Airline To Become Israeli

Matzav -

On Sunday, Transportation Minister Miri Regev granted an official Israeli trade license to Tus Air, a Cypriot airline, marking a significant step in expanding Israel’s aviation network.

With this authorization in place, Tus Air is now positioned to begin operating new flight routes connecting Israel to multiple destinations, including those beyond Europe. The airline will also be formally recognized as part of the group of Israeli-licensed carriers.

Minister Regev commented on the development, saying, “This is consumer and strategic news that will contribute to expanding competition, grow the number of destinations, and lead to a decrease in airfare. This is the second carrier to join the Israeli fleet.”

Tus Air is expected to complete the final stages of its operational certification shortly. Once approved, it will join the ranks of Israeli carriers such as ELAL, Israir, and Air Haifa—a new airline that began service in 2024 and operates flights from Haifa to both domestic and international locations.

Interior Committee Chair Calls for Urgent Measures to Prevent Mortgage Crisis

Matzav -

Knesset Interior Committee Chairman MK Yaakov Asher (UTJ) has sounded the alarm over a growing mortgage crisis, calling on Finance Minister Betzalel Smotrich and Bank of Israel Governor Amir Yaron to take swift and decisive action. His plea follows troubling reports showing a notable rise in missed mortgage payments across the country.

Speaking at a conference hosted by the Association of Chareidi Mortgage Advisors, Asher expressed serious concern over the direction the housing finance sector is heading. “When you start hearing about a rise in missed payments, that’s already an emergency,” he said. “Tightening financial conditions will only strangle mortgage holders, making it harder for them to repay, and that will push many into insolvency.”

Asher warned that the ramifications of inaction could be far-reaching. He explained that a collapse in the mortgage sector could trigger a broader financial crisis. “Without a systemic solution, we could see the collapse of an entire market,” Asher cautioned. “If people can’t manage their mortgage repayments, no other economic policy will matter, because there will be no functioning mortgage market left to implement policy in.”

Although Asher made clear that he does not wish to meddle in the central bank’s authority over monetary policy, he emphasized that there are other steps that can be taken to offer relief to struggling homeowners. “There are complementary tools and solutions available that can help prevent families from financial collapse,” he said.

These mounting concerns within the chareidi sector are compounded by the broader economic pressures of wartime budget tightening, along with efforts by coalition factions to penalize those in the community who do not enlist in the IDF.

Cruel Deception: Hamas Lied To Israeli Hostage About Imminent Release

Matzav -

A new report aired by Channel 12 on Sunday revealed a deeply disturbing act of psychological cruelty by Hamas against Israeli hostage Matan Zangauker. His family learned that Hamas had falsely assured him that he would be freed alongside US-Israeli captive Edan Alexander and reunited with his loved ones.

The report noted that this information surfaced following Alexander’s release. The two had been held in the same location, and Zangauker was led to believe he would be joining Alexander in freedom.

On the day Edan was released, Hamas deceived Zangauker by claiming that his own release was imminent. He was even instructed to gather his personal items in preparation for the return home. Believing the end of his ordeal was near, Matan chose not to send a message to his mother with Edan, assuming he would be seeing her in person very shortly.

But the truth was far more cruel. Just as he was prepared to leave, the terrorists revealed their lie, telling him he would not be going home. Instead, only Edan was being released. The psychological toll of this betrayal reportedly had a devastating effect on Zangauker’s mental well-being.

On Saturday, Hamas released a photo showing Matan connected to an IV drip. The terror group claimed the image was taken in response to intensified IDF activity near the area where he is believed to be held, asserting that his life was in danger due to the military operations.

IDF Spokesman: ‘European Aid Funds Were Found In Hamas Tunnels’

Matzav -

In a dramatic statement on Sunday, IDF spokesman Effie Defrin addressed the media from deep beneath the European Hospital in Khan Yunis, Gaza, where Israeli forces uncovered a hidden underground compound.

Delivering his remarks from the subterranean location, Defrin condemned Hamas for misappropriating civilian infrastructure for terror operations. “I am standing in the underground facility beneath the European Hospital in Khan Yunis. This is where European aid funds ended up – not in medical care, but in the construction of terror tunnels and infrastructure,” he declared, gesturing toward a pile of cash discovered in the tunnel system.

He went on to condemn Hamas’s manipulation of humanitarian sites, saying, “Hamas has once again made cynical use of a civilian hospital, using it not to save lives, but to facilitate death and murder. This is one of the places from which the October 7 attacks were orchestrated.”

According to Defrin, the tunnel network had been used by high-ranking Hamas operatives, including Mohamed Sinwar, the brother of Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar, and Shabana, the head of the Rafah Brigade. “This is the room where Sinwar and Shabana were staying when they were targeted by IDF strikes about a month ago. We can now confirm with certainty that Mohamed Sinwar was here and was killed in the strike,” he said. “We will continue to hunt down every last member of Hamas until we achieve the objectives of this war.”

Alongside Defrin were members of the elite Yahalom combat engineering unit and fighters from the Golani Brigade, who played a central role in the mission to capture the tunnel compound. Defrin noted, “We discovered large sums of money here, not for civilian use, but to fund terrorism. Along with the cash, we found a significant stockpile of weapons.”

In closing, Defrin reaffirmed Israel’s determination to destroy Hamas’s war-making capability. “This underground complex exemplifies how Hamas exploits humanitarian resources to wage war. Our mission will not end until that threat is fully neutralized.”

Gerrer Rebbe Arrives In United States On Urgent Fundraising Mission For Gerrer Mosdos

Yeshiva World News -

In a move to safeguard the Gerrer Mosdos in Eretz Yisroel, the Gerer Rebbe departed Eretz Yisroel on Motzeoi Shabbos for the United States, leading a critical emergency fundraising campaign to rescue Gerrer educational institutions facing unprecedented financial peril. The Rebbe’s journey, aboard a private jet graciously provided by Philanthropist Yoeli Landau and his partner David Gefner, comes as government funding for chareidi mosdos has been slashed, with no legislative relief in sight for full-time lomdei Torah. Sources within the Gur community revealed that the campaign aims to secure sufficient funds to sustain all Gur educational institutions for the next two years, ensuring the continuity of Torah and chinuch. A well-placed source in Gur tells YWN that the rebbe will be going home with a staggering $20 million for his Mosdos. A pinnacle of the Rebbe’s visit will be a major fundraising dinner on Sunday evening, at the home of Philanthropist and mega Askan Reb Shlomo Werdiger, chairman of Agudath Israel of America. SEE THE VIDEO: Hamas Leader Mohammed Sinwar’s Body Found in Tunnel Under Gaza Hospital

Yeshiva World News -

The IDF and Shin Bet confirmed that the body of Hamas terror leader Mohammed Sinwar was recovered by troops from a tunnel beneath the European Hospital in Khan Younis, southern Gaza. The tunnel, used by Hamas as a command center, was accessed by IDF forces several days ago, with Sinwar’s body and those of other Hamas operatives retrieved on Shabbos. Following a meticulous identification process, the IDF verified that one of the bodies belongs to Sinwar, who was eliminated in a precise Israeli strike on the tunnel on May 13. The strike also neutralized Muhammad Shabana, commander of Hamas’ Rafah Brigade, and Mahdi Quara, commander of the South Khan Younis Battalion. Inside the tunnel, troops uncovered personal items belonging to Sinwar and Shabana, including identification cards, as well as weapons. The IDF continues to identify the remaining bodies, underscoring its relentless efforts to dismantle Hamas’ terror infrastructure and bring justice to those threatening Israel’s security. Crown Heights Jewish Community Backing Cuomo In NYC Mayoral Primary

Yeshiva World News -

Crown Heights has officially thrown its support behind Andrew Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral primary, making it the third Orthodox Jewish community to endorse the former governor. The neighborhood joins Far Rockaway and the Bobov community in Borough Park in backing Cuomo’s bid. This endorsement is particularly significant, as YWN reported in may 2021, Crown Heights was the first Chassidic community to endorse Mayor Eric Adams in the 2021 primary. With Mayor Adams not running in the democratic primary, and polls showing a competitive contest between Zohran Mamdani and Cuomo, the Crown Heights Jewish community has now united behind Cuomo. Statement from Crown Jewish United and the Crown Heights PAC: Endorse Andrew Cuomo for Mayor “Crown Jewish United and the Crown Heights PAC are joining forces to offer a unified endorsement of Andrew Cuomo as our #1 choice for Mayor in the upcoming primary. In the past, our groups have endorsed different candidates. But this year, one of the contenders is openly promoting anti-Semitic rhetoric, supports the BDS movement, threatened to arrest Prime Minister Netanyahu if he visits New York, and chose to attack Israel instead of condemning Hamas on October 8, 2023—while the deadliest massacre of Jews by Hamas in modern history was still unfolding. We believe it is vital to stand together and speak with one voice. Andrew Cuomo is the only candidate who can stop Zohran Mamdani in the primary. Later this week, we will announce our #2 and #3 mayoral endorsements, along with our support for candidates in other local races.”

Israel Prepares to Block Gaza-Bound Flotilla As Antisemite “Activists” Claim Signal Jamming [VIDEO]

Yeshiva World News -

A Brazilian activist (aka anti-semite) aboard the Gaza-bound vessel Madleen claimed Sunday that the ship’s navigation and communication systems were being jammed, suggesting that Israel is preparing to intercept the controversial flotilla before it reaches the Gaza Strip. Thiago Ávila, a left-wing activist sailing with the flotilla, posted a video alleging that their onboard tracker was spoofed, showing their location not near Gaza but bizarrely at Jordan’s airport. “We know what this means,” he said. “When they start jamming our communications, when they start messing with our devices, it means they are preparing for an interception or an attack.” Ávila further accused Israel of “preparing to commit a war crime” and called on supporters to apply international pressure to prevent what he framed as a possible military confrontation. The flotilla, which includes antisemites from several countries and is joined by Swedish “climate activist Greta Thunberg”, is expected to attempt to breach the naval blockade on Gaza as early as Monday. Thunberg, the 22-year-old Swedish “environmentalist” who was named “Antisemite of the Week” last year, boarded the Madleen boat in Sicily on Sunday along with EU parliament member Rima Hassan, who was blocked from entering Israel earlier this year due to her anti-Israel activities.   Israel has made clear that such a breach will not be tolerated. Defense Minister Yisrael Katz responded on Sunday, announcing that he had instructed the IDF to take all necessary action to block the flotilla. “Israel will not allow anyone to violate the naval blockade on Gaza, which is aimed at preventing weapons from reaching Hamas — a murderous terrorist organization holding our hostages and committing war crimes,” Katz said. Directly addressing Thunberg and other members of the flotilla, Katz added sharply: “To Greta the antisemite and her Hamas propaganda-spouting friends, I say clearly: turn around — you will not reach Gaza. Israel will act against any attempt to break the blockade or assist terrorist organizations — by sea, air, or land.” (YWN World Headquarters – NYC)

HY’D: Tzvi-Hirsh Zurgazda, 32-Year-Old Father Of 2, Killed On Front Lines Of Russia-Ukraine War

Yeshiva World News -

Tzvi-Hirsh (Grisha) Zurgazda, a 32-year-old father of two and a beloved member of the kehilla in Odessa, was killed in combat last Thursday while serving on the front lines near Kherson. He is the third Jewish soldier to fall in Ukraine’s ongoing war within the past two weeks. Zurgazda served in the Ukrainian army’s 34th Brigade, which is responsible for defending key areas in the country’s southern region, including coastal defenses near the Black Sea. A proud Jew and graduate of Odessa’s Or Avner-Chabad school, Zurgazda remained deeply connected to Torah even while in uniform. Before the war, he worked as a professional chef and often spoke of his dream to open Odessa’s first Michelin-starred kosher restaurant—an ambition put on hold by the ongoing conflict. “Tzvi-Hirsh was a true ben Torah and a cherished child of our community,” said Rabbi Avraham Wolf, Chief Rabbi of Odessa and Southern Ukraine. “He gave his life al kiddush Hashem—not only in defense of his country, but as a Jew who never let go of his roots. Our hearts are broken.” Zurgazda is survived by his wife and two young children: Elissa, age four, and Lev, age five. His levaya is expected to take place later this week in Odessa, with Rabbi Wolf and members of the local kehillah in attendance. Efforts to waive an autopsy and arrange a proper halachic burial were coordinated by Yakov Sinyakov of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine (FJCU). His petirah comes amid a string of recent Jewish casualties on the battlefield. Just last week, Andrey Korovetsky, a teacher at the Chabad school in Zhytomyr, died after suffering a cardiac arrest on the front lines, having previously returned to duty after an injury. And two weeks ago, Maxim Nelipa, a well-known Jewish journalist and actor, was killed in combat in eastern Ukraine. His son Artyom, currently serving in the IDF’s Golani Brigade, received word of his father’s death while stationed in Gaza. According to Rabbi Meir Stambler, chairman of the FJCU, over 200 Jewish soldiers have lost their lives since the start of the war. “We continue to work closely with Chabad shluchim to ensure kavod hameis, offer financial assistance to families, and arrange for Kaddish and support in their memory,” he said. Chicago Police Officer Accidentally Killed by Partner During Suspect Pursuit

Yeshiva World News -

A Chicago police officer was unintentionally shot and killed by her partner after they chased a suspect into an apartment and encountered another person with a rifle, officials said. Krystal Rivera, 36, a four-year veteran of the department, is survived by a 10-year-old daughter. The partner was the only person who fired a weapon, and the “gunfire unintentionally struck Officer Rivera,” city police said in a statement Friday. An autopsy showed she was shot in the back. Rivera died at a hospital late Thursday, less than an hour after being shot. Colleagues had brought her to the hospital in a squad car that crashed and caught on fire due to a malfunction, according to Police Superintendent Larry Snelling. She was then transported in another squad car. The person who allegedly brandished the rifle was taken into custody, police said. They did not immediately say what charges the person would face. The shooting occurred just before 10 p.m. on Thursday as Rivera’s tactical unit conducted a stop on someone suspected of having a weapon. A chase ensued that ended in the apartment. Investigators later found three weapons at the scene, police said. Snelling called Rivera “young, vibrant and a hard worker.” Her mother told The Chicago Sun-Times that she had dreamed of being a police officer since she was young. “For me, it’s a privilege,” Rivera told the Sun-Times when she graduated from the academy in 2021. “I come from a family of serving. To help people in need, that’s my calling.” (AP)

HaRav Yosef and Aryeh Deri Visit Arson Scene; Shas Party To Fund Personal Security Guard

Yeshiva World News -

HaGaon HaRav Yitzchak Yosef arrived at the Ohr Chaviv shul on Sunday afternoon and witnessed the damage caused by a deliberate act of arson overnight. The sight caused tears to roll down his face. HaRav Yosef arrived at Ohr Chaviv together with Shas chairman Aryeh Deri, who met earlier with senior police officials at his home. Deri also spoke with Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar, who informed him that the Shin Bet is treating the incident with the highest level of severity, as a nationalistic terror attack, and that an accelerated investigation is underway. According to a Kikar H’Shabbat report, the Shas party is paying for a personal security guard for HaRav Yosef until the end of the investigation. Deri and HaRav Yosef were accompanied on the visit to the site by senior police and Shin Bet officials. Deri, with HaRav Yosef at his side, spoke to the press: “There is no greater hate crime than this. To come and burn a shul – this is an unforgivable act. We saw the burned sefarim kedoshim, and it is a great neis that the Aron Kodesh and Sifrei Torah were saved. The sight is heartbreaking. We have just heard from the police and Shin Bet officers, and they hope that they will be able to solve the case in the coming hours.” Deri emphasized: “Enough with the hatred! Enough with the incitement! See where this discourse leads. It’s not just about debates on the air – ultimately, there are people on the fringes who take things seriously and do terrible things. We could have come today and discovered that there is no shul and no sifrei Torah, chalilah. It is a great neis that the firefighters arrived immediately and extinguished the fire.” “I call on everyone to stop. Words can kill. Imagine if such an event had occurred in France or any other country – we would be shocked. We must not accept such a reality in the State of Israel.” Earlier on Sunday morning, Shin Bet investigators arrived to examine the scene after it was decided that the Shin Bet would manage the arson investigation alongside investigators from the Central Unit of the Jerusalem Police. A preliminary investigation suggests that the arsonist sought to personally harm HaRav Yosef. The security camera footage shows him entering the shul, approaching the Rishon LeZion’s chair, pouring flammable material on it, setting it on fire, and fleeing the scene. New Disputes Emerge Ahead Of US-China Trade Talks In London

Yeshiva World News -

U.S.-China trade talks in London this week are expected to take up a series of fresh disputes that have buffeted relations, threatening a fragile truce over tariffs. Both sides agreed in Geneva last month to a 90-day suspension of most of the 100%-plus tariffs they had imposed on each other in an escalating trade war that had sparked fears of recession. Since then, the U.S. and China have exchanged angry words over advanced semiconductors that power artificial intelligence, “rare earths” that are vital to carmakers and other industries, and visas for Chinese students at American universities. President Donald Trump spoke at length with Chinese leader Xi Jinping by phone last Thursday in an attempt to put relations back on track. Trump announced on social media the next day that trade talks would be held on Monday in London. Technology is a major sticking point The latest frictions began just a day after the May 12 announcement of the Geneva agreement to “pause” tariffs for 90 days. The U.S. Commerce Department issued guidance saying the use of Ascend AI chips from Huawei, a leading Chinese tech company, could violate U.S. export controls. That’s because the chips were likely developed with American technology despite restrictions on its export to China, the guidance said. The Chinese government wasn’t pleased. One of its biggest beefs in recent years has been over U.S. moves to limit the access of Chinese companies to technology, and in particular to equipment and processes needed to produce the most advanced semiconductors. “The Chinese side urges the U.S. side to immediately correct its erroneous practices,” a Commerce Ministry spokesperson said. U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick wasn’t in Geneva but will join the talks in London. Analysts say that suggests at least a willingness on the U.S. side to hear out China’s concerns on export controls. China shows signs of easing up on rare earths One area where China holds the upper hand is in the mining and processing of rare earths. They are crucial for not only autos but also a range of other products from robots to military equipment. The Chinese government started requiring producers to obtain a license to export seven rare earth elements in April. Resulting shortages sent automakers worldwide into a tizzy. As stockpiles ran down, some worried they would have to halt production. Trump, without mentioning rare earths specifically, took to social media to attack China. “The bad news is that China, perhaps not surprisingly to some, HAS TOTALLY VIOLATED ITS AGREEMENT WITH US,” Trump posted on May 30. The Chinese government indicated Saturday that it is addressing the concerns, which have come from European companies as well. A Commerce Ministry statement said it had granted some approvals and “will continue to strengthen the approval of applications that comply with regulations.” The scramble to resolve the rare earth issue shows that China has a strong card to play if it wants to strike back against tariffs or other measures. Plan to revoke student visas adds to tensions Student visas don’t normally figure in trade talks, but a U.S. announcement that it would begin revoking the visas of some Chinese students has emerged as another thorn in the relationship. China’s Commerce Ministry raised the issue when asked last week about the accusation that it had violated the consensus reached in Geneva. It replied that the U.S. had undermined the agreement by issuing export control guidelines […]
