Am I allowed to make egg and onion on Shabbos? How to choose a shirt from a pile of clothing and not transgress borer on Shabbos? Can you put food in the oven on Shabbos? Numerous Shabbos questions are impossible to answer without thorough knowledge of its laws. Shabbos comes once a week, so if a person is not well-versed in its intricacies, then it is inevitable that transgressions will take place. The many books of basic laws are wonderful, but to really understand the halachos and to apply them, it is essential to learn and remember hilchos Shabbos with the background discussion. What is the challenge we face? It takes several years for a full-time advanced Torah learner to cover the laws of Shabbos in depth. Kinyan Hilchos Shabbos for men offered a solution. World famous Rosh Yeshiva and Rosh Kollel, HaRav Hagaon Yitzchak Berkovits shlit’a used his vast knowledge to arrange all the Gemaras with the commentators on each area of hilchos Shabbos and presented it in the form of source sheets that cover material from the Gemara until practical halacha. This enables one to cover the main opinions in each topic and gain a deep understanding of the halacha without being overwhelmed with a lot of information. Rabbi Yehonasan Gefen, a close talmid of Rav Berkovits who spent eight years as a Rosh Chaburah in Rav Berkovits’s famous Jerusalem Kollel, with the Rav’s endorsement, took on the monumental task of adaptng the Hebrew sheets into English to make the program available for busy professionals. After successfully running the Hilchos Shabbos program for several years, Rabbi Gefen joined forces with Rabbi Dr. Yakov Pesah, also a musmach of Rabbi Berkovits, and together they co-founded ‘Kinyan Hilchos Shabbos’ program for men and launched it online. It became an instant success worldwide. During the launches of the Hilchos Shabbos course for men, it became crystal clear that a course especially tailored for Jewish women was necessary. The program received many emails asking for a women’s cohort of this important and highly relevant series. Women, just as much as men, require practical knowledge on how to keep the myriad halachos of Shabbos. Indeed, they may even be faced with more scenarios than men. Therefore, Rabbi Gefen, in consultation with Rabbi Berkovits has adapted the original curriculum to be uniquely tailored to Torah observant women, as an online program in Hilchos Shabbos (www.HilchosShabbosforWomen.com), accessible to motvated women worldwide. It empowers women to know the laws of Shabbos that are so relevant to their lives. Participants in each online chabura receive source sheets with explanations in English. In addition to the weekly online Zoom shiur with Rabbi Gefen, he is available for questions. There are tests in each section, and the option of a signed certificate of completion from Rav Berkovits. While this course for women is in Hilchos Shabbos, several months ago, Rabbi Gefen has also launched another online program for women in Hilchos Bein Adam L’Chaveiro. This program is based on a curriculum of Kollel Linas Hatzedek / Center for Jewish Values, a premier international Bein Adam L’Chaveiro resource, whom we thank for their permission. The Bein Adam L’Chaveiro online program for women taught by Rabbi Gefen became very successful already in its first launch. “As women, we are required to learn […]

On Tuesday evening, sirens blared in southern Ramat HaGolan for the first time in months as Israel’s Home Front Command issued an alert for rocket fire from Daraa, Syria, with the IDF reporting two rockets landed in open areas, causing no injuries, though residents heard explosions.
Federal agents took the family of Mohamed Soliman, charged in the fire attack in Boulder, Colorado, into ICE custody, as authorities investigate their potential knowledge or support of the attack, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said, noting Soliman entered the U.S. legally in August 2022 on a tourist visa and applied for asylum the following month.
Sirens blared on Tuesday evening in southern Ramat HaGolan for the first time in months after Israel’s Home Front Command issued an alert about rocket and missile fire toward the area. Residents reported hearing the sounds of explosions. The IDF spokesperson reported that two rockets were fired at Israel from Daraa in southern Syria. Baruch Hashem, they fell in open areas, and no injuries were reported. About 20 minutes later, sirens were heard in central Israel and the Shfela lowlands after the Houthis in Yemen launched a missile at Israel, sending millions of Israelis to their bomb shelters. Shortly later, the IDF announced that the missile was successfully intercepted. The IDF responded to the rockets from Syria with artillery fire at the source of the fire in southern Syria. Following the incident, Defense Minister Yisrael Katz said that he holds Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa “directly responsible for every threat and rocket toward the State of Israel” and threatened that “the full response will come as soon.” It is not yet known which terror group carried out the attack. As a coalition crisis continues to loom over the stalemate in the Chareidi draft law, Degel HaTorah chairman Moshe Gafni conveyed a sharply worded message to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on Tuesday. According to party sources, the message, conveyed by Gafni in the name of HaGaon HaRav Dov Landau and HaGaon HaRav Moshe Hillel Hirsch, was that if no significant progress is made by this evening in formulating a draft law, a clear directive will be given to “immediately escalate measures against the coalition.” B’Chadrei Chareidim reported that the UTJ party is awaiting the results of a meeting to be held on Tuesday evening with the chairman of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, Yuli Edelstein, after which a decision on the matter will be made by the Gedolei HaDor. According to estimates, if no real breakthrough is reached, the possibility of escalating political measures will be considered, including freezing votes in the coalition or even supporting the dissolution of the Knesset. Also on Tuesday, it was reported that Housing Minister Yitzchak Goldknopf’s right-hand man, Motti Babchik, held an extended meeting with National Unity chairman Benny Gantz. According to Babchik’s associates, the two discussed, among other things, the possibility of supporting a law to dissolve the Knesset, but emphasized that no decisions were made. However, it should be noted that last week, HaRav Hirsch told the Belzer Rebbe’s son that dissolving the government would only be carried out as an absolutely last resort. Earlier on Tuesday, opposition head Yair Lapid tried to stir up conflict between Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Chareidim. Speaking at the opening of a Yesh Atid party meeting, he said: “I want to say from here to the Gedolei Yisrael, to the Gerrer Rebbe, to HaRav Landau, to HaRav Hirsch, to HaRav Yitzchak Yosef: know that you are being deceived. Netanyahu knows that there will be no evasion law, he is only buying time to somehow get through the summer session.” “All he cares about is still being in power during his cross-examination in court,” Lapid claimed. “He is selling you fairy tales and empty promises. He cannot pass the law you want.” (YWN’s Jerusalem desk is keeping you updated on Isru Chag in Israel.)
US Senator Lindsey Graham on Sunday linked an article referring to Greta Thunberg’s trip to Gaza on a “humanitarian aid” boat on his X account, commenting, “Hope Greta and her friends can swim!” Thunberg, the 22-year-old Swedish “environmentalist” who was named “Antisemite of the Week” last year, boarded the Madleen boat in Sicily on Sunday along with EU parliament member Rima Hassan, who was blocked from entering Israel earlier this year due to her anti-Israel activities. The so-called Gaza “freedom flotilla” [consisting of one boat] is expected to arrive in Gaza in a week, with the goal of defying Israel’s naval blockade on terror groups in the Gaza Strip. The Madleen is operated by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), which previously tried to sail to Gaza from Malta in May but allegedly came under a mysterious drone attack, thwarting the attempt. The group blamed Israel for the attack but provided no evidence of its claim. Israel has not commented on the attack. Thunberg told the press before boarding, “The moment we stop trying is when we lose our humanity. And no matter how dangerous this mission is, it’s not even near as dangerous as the silence of the entire world in the face of the live-streamed genocide.” Thunberg made her claims despite the fact that Israel has aided the US-supported group, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), to distribute millions of meals to its own enemies – the so-called “innocent” civilians of Gaza. The Trump administration has approved a plan by Syria’s new leadership to incorporate thousands of foreign jihadist former rebel fighters into the national army, Reuters reported on Monday. Thomas Barrack, the U.S. ambassador to Turkey who was named Trump’s special envoy to Syria last month, told Reuters that it’s better to keep the fighters within a state project than to exclude them. “I would say there is an understanding, with transparency,” Barrack said. According to the report, until early May, the demand that Syria exclude foreign fighters from security forces was a main point of contention with the US and other Western countries. However, following Trump’s trip to the Middle East last month, the White House’s approach to Syria changed sharply. Trump met with Syria’s interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Riyadh, lifted Assad-era sanctions on the country, and named Barrack, a close friend, as his special envoy. Three Syrian defense officials said that about 3,500 foreign fighters, mainly Uyghurs from China and neighboring countries, will join the 84th Syrian army division. Two sources close to the Syrian defense ministry told Reuters that Syria’s new leadership told Western countries that bringing foreign fighters into the army will prevent them from joining al-Qaeda or Islamic State. The U.S. State Department and a Syrian government spokesperson did not respond to requests for comment. Israel’s Kan News reported that about 15,000 Uyghurs currently live in Syria, of which about 5,000 are jihadist fighters who have fought in Syria’s civil war since 2013. Many of them belong to the Turkistan Islamic Party (TIP), an Uyghur Islamist organization whose goals are to establish an Islamic state in northwest China and central Asia. TIP, which is defined as a terrorist organization in China, as well as in the United States, Russia, and other countries, has links to al-Qaeda and affiliated groups such as the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan and the Pakistani Taliban. The US has designated it as having received “training and financial assistance” from al-Qaeda. On a related note, Barrack confirmed on Tuesday that the US has begun to decrease its military presence in Syria, with the ultimate goal of consolidating all US forces on one base. “We’ve gone from eight bases to five, and now to three,” Barrack told Turkish media. “Eventually, we will have only one.” (YWN’s Jerusalem desk is keeping you updated on Isru Chag in Israel.)
A violent attack rocked a gathering in Colorado today, where a man reportedly launched an attack using Molotov cocktails during a peaceful event advocating for the release of Israeli hostages in Gaza. Authorities say the attack left several injured, including a woman who was badly burned after being set ablaze.
According to 9News, the suspect had been seen waiting outside the Boulder courthouse with bottles in his hands before the weekly Run For Their Lives walk began. As participants passed by, he began hurling the incendiary devices into the group.
Event organizer Miri Kornfeld recounted the horrific scene, saying the man’s actions injured five people and caused severe burns to one woman, who was forced to drop to the ground and roll to put out the fire.
Eyewitnesses told CBS Colorado that they saw the attacker approach the crowd and throw Molotov cocktails directly at them.
“We are aware of and fully investigating a targeted terror attack in Boulder, Colorado,’’ FBI Director Kash Patel wrote on X shortly before 5:30 p.m.
“Our agents and local law enforcement are on the scene already, and we will share updates as more information becomes available.”
Run For Their Lives issued a statement emphasizing the nature of their weekly walk, clarifying that “it is not a protest; it is a peaceful walk to show solidarity with the hostages and their families, and a plea for their release.”
The group began their walk at 1 p.m., following a route along Pearl Street and 8th Street, ending at the Pearl Street Mall. They had planned to pause at the courthouse for a video segment when the assault occurred.
Colorado Governor Jared Polis released a statement expressing outrage over the violence and vowing to provide updates as the investigation continues.
“I am closely monitoring the situation in Boulder, and my thoughts go out to the people who have been injured and impacted by this heinous act of terror. Hate-filled acts of any kind are unacceptable,” Polis wrote in a post on X.
Images from the scene showed a shirtless individual holding two bottles filled with a clear substance. That same man was later taken into custody by local police.
The exact number of those hurt remains uncertain. Boulder Police have not released additional details but have urged the public to steer clear of the area as the investigation unfolds.
