US-China Tariff Talks to Continue Sunday

Yeshiva World News -

Sensitive talks between U.S. and Chinese delegations over tariffs that threaten to upend the global economy ended after a day of prolonged negotiations and will resume Sunday, an official told The Associated Press. There was no immediate indication whether progress was made Saturday during the meeting over 10 hours between Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and a delegation led by Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng. The official who spoke to the AP requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the talks, which could help stabilize world markets roiled by the U.S.-China standoff. The talks have been shrouded in secrecy, and neither side made comments to reporters on the way out. Several convoys of black vehicles left the residence of the Swiss ambassador to the U.N. in Geneva, which hosted the talks aimed at de-escalating trade tensions between the world’s two biggest economies. Diplomats from both sides also confirmed that the talks took place. Saturday’s talks were held in the sumptuous 18th-century “Villa Saladin” overlooking Lake Geneva. The former estate was bequeathed to the Swiss state in 1973, according to the Geneva government. Prospects for a major breakthrough appear dim. But there is hope that the two countries will scale back the massive taxes — tariffs — they have slapped on each other’s goods, a move that would relieve world financial markets and companies on both sides of the Pacific Ocean that depend on U.S.-China trade. U.S. President Donald Trump last month raised U.S. tariffs on China to a combined 145%, and China retaliated by hitting American imports with a 125% levy. Tariffs that high essentially amount to the countries’ boycotting each other’s products, disrupting trade that last year topped $660 billion. Even before the talks began, Trump suggested Friday that the U.S. could lower its tariffs on China, saying in a Truth Social post that “ 80% Tariff seems right! Up to Scott.″ Sun Yun, director of the China program at the Stimson Center, noted it will be the first time He and Bessent have talked. She doubts the Geneva meeting will produce any substantive results. “The best scenario is for the two sides to agree to de-escalate on the … tariffs at the same time,” she said, adding even a small reduction would send a positive signal. “It cannot just be words.” Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has aggressively used tariffs as his favorite economic weapon. He has, for example, imposed a 10% tax on imports from almost every country in the world. But the fight with China has been the most intense. His tariffs on China include a 20% charge meant to pressure Beijing into doing more to stop the flow of the synthetic opioid fentanyl into the United States. The remaining 125% involve a dispute that dates back to Trump’s first term and comes atop tariffs he levied on China back then, which means the total tariffs on some Chinese goods can exceed 145%. During Trump’s first term, the U.S. alleged that China uses unfair tactics to give itself an edge in advanced technologies such as quantum computing and driverless cars. These include forcing U.S. and other foreign companies to hand over trade secrets in exchange for access to the Chinese market; using government money to subsidize domestic tech […]

Trump Supports Tax Hike on Wealthy but Urges GOP to Avoid It, Proposes Small Business Carve-Out

Yeshiva World News -

Trump backs tax hike on rich, but says GOP ‘should probably not do it’ President Donald Trump says he would back raising taxes on the richest Americans to help pay for his domestic agenda. The politics of a tax hike are difficult for Republicans to stomach, but so are the potential deficits that would result from enacting cuts without money to pay for them. Trump called House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., about a tax hike and proposed a carve-out for small business owners, many of whom report business income on their individual returns.

IDF Eliminates ‘Most-Wanted’ Terrorist In Shomron, Was Planning Imminent Attack

Yeshiva World News -

Israeli security forces on Friday eliminated Nur Bitawi, the head of the Islamic Jihad terror branch in Jenin, during an operation in Shechem, the IDF announced. “Bitawi advanced major terror activities and was involved in directing, financing, and carrying out attacks against Israeli civilians and security forces,” the IDF statement said. “He also maintained contact with Hamas officials in Gaza and abroad.” “Bitawi was responsible for funneling terror funds to Jenin and other villages in the area, and in this context, he worked to recruit and arm terrorists to carry out attacks against IDF forces. Simultaneously, he led the production and placement of IEDs in the Jenin area.” “He had been wanted for several months after being identified by security forces fleeing from Jenin towards Shechem following the IDF operation in the northern Shomron. Following Shin Bet intelligence and operational activities, he was located in a house in Shechem.” “Yamam officers, Shin Bet operatives, and IDF forces surrounded the house and eliminated him and another terrorist.” (YWN’s Jerusalem desk is keeping you updated after tzeis ha’Shabbos in Israel)

Israel To Escalate Attacks On Houthis Amid Continued Missile Launches

Yeshiva World News -

The Houthis in Yemen fired another missile at Israel on Friday, which was Baruch Hashem successfully intercepted by the Arrow 3 missile defense system. Following the attack, an Israeli security official told Ynet that Israel is not a party to the Houthi-US ceasefire and will continue attacking the Houthis. “We’ll continue striking the Houthis without any restrictions,” he said. “That deal doesn’t bind us. They’ll pay the price.” According to the report, Israel plans on carrying out broader and more powerful strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen in the coming days. Israeli security officials also warned that “Iran won’t get off easy,” adding that Israel is weighing possible strikes on Iranian targets. Hamas Releases Another Video Of Yosef Chaim Ohana And Elkana Bochbot

Yeshiva World News -

The Hamas terror organization engaged in another act of psychological warfare on Shabbos, releasing a video of Elkana Bochbot and Yosef Chaim Ohana. The cruel video shows Elkana lying on a mattress with a picture of him and his young son on the wall next to him. Only Yosef Chaim speaks in the video and says [in statements scripted by his captors] that Elkana tried to harm himself after realizing how long the war was dragging on. “His mental and physical state has seriously deteriorated since we realized the war was dragging on for months,” he says. “Since then, he’s been trying to hurt himself again and again. He’s refusing to eat or drink.” “How is this war still going on?” he continued. “How has it not stopped? Tell me — have you all gone mad? A year and seven months. What else needs to happen that hasn’t already? An entire country wants this to end. This nightmare. Enough! It’s time to stop.” Hamas previously released a video of the two on March 24 and released another video of just Bochbot on April 19. Bochbot, 34, a husband and father of a young son, was abducted from the Nova music festival. Ohana, 24, from Kiryat Malachi, was also abducted from Nova. When the attack began, Yosef Chaim and his friend began to flee the area. But when they encountered Israelis wounded by Hamas gunfire, the two, both trained as medics during their army service, stopped to help them. Eventually, they ran in different directions when they themselves were targeted by Hamas terrorists. His friend survived and Yosef Chaim was abducted.
