Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. continued his public campaign on Sunday to bring greater attention to what he calls a national crisis: the rising rates of autism in children.

Speaking during an appearance on a New York-based radio show, Kennedy emphasized the urgent need for deeper scientific research into the causes of autism. “This is an epidemic. It dwarfs the COVID epidemic and the impacts on our country because COVID killed old people. Autism affects children and affects them at the beginning of their lives, the beginning of their productivity,” Kennedy said, according to The Hill.

Kennedy has remained unwavering in his criticism of the current government response to autism, particularly the belief that improved diagnostic tools account for the rising numbers. He directly challenged findings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which attribute the increase largely to more accurate diagnosis and heightened awareness.

On Wednesday, Kennedy reiterated his belief that the country is facing an “autism epidemic,” insisting it cannot be written off as the result of “better diagnostic criteria” or “genes.”

He stressed that the data points to something far more serious than what improved screening could explain. “One of the things that I think we need to move away from today is this ideology that the autism prevalence increases, the relentless increases, are simply artifacts of better diagnoses, better recognition, or changing diagnostic criteria,” Kennedy argued.

In a recent social media post, Kennedy pointed to updated figures highlighting the scope of the issue. “Autism prevalence in the U.S. has increased from 1 in 36 children to 1 in 31. We will find the root cause of this epidemic and Make America Healthy Again,” he wrote.

Kennedy’s comments are part of an ongoing effort to reshape national health priorities and rally support for a more aggressive pursuit of answers regarding the causes of autism in American children.

The Supreme Court on Saturday blocked, for now, the deportations of any Venezuelans held in northern Texas under an 18th century wartime law. In a brief order, the court directed the Trump administration not to remove Venezuelans held in the Bluebonnet Detention Center “until further order of this court.” Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito dissented. The high court acted in an emergency appeal from the American Civil Liberties Union contending that immigration authorities appeared to be moving to restart removals under the Alien Enemies Act of 1798. The Supreme Court had said earlier in April that deportations could proceed only if those about to be removed had a chance to argue their case in court and were given “a reasonable time” to contest their pending removals. “We are deeply relieved that the Court has temporarily blocked the removals. These individuals were in imminent danger of spending the rest of their lives in a brutal Salvadoran prison without ever having had any due process,” ACLU lawyer Lee Gelernt said in an email. The Trump administration later Saturday filed paperwork urging the high court to reconsider its hold. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Saturday in a post on X: “We are confident we will ultimately prevail against the onslaught of meritless litigation brought by radical activists.” On Friday, two federal judges refused to step in as lawyers for the men launched a desperate legal campaign to prevent their deportation, even as one judge said the case raised legitimate concerns. Early Saturday, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals also refused to issue an order protecting the detainees from being deported. The ACLU had already sued to block deportations of two Venezuelans held in the Bluebonnet facility and sought an order barring removals of any immigrants in the region under the Alien Enemies Act. In an emergency filing early Friday, the ACLU warned that immigration authorities were accusing other Venezuelan men held there of being members of the Tren de Aragua gang, which would make them subject to President Donald Trump’s use of the act. The act has only been invoked three previous times in U.S. history, most recently during World War II to hold Japanese-American civilians in internment camps. The Trump administration contended it gave them power to swiftly remove immigrants they identified as members of the gang, regardless of their immigration status. Following the unanimous high court order on April 9, federal judges in Colorado, New York and southern Texas promptly issued orders barring removal of detainees under the AEA until the administration provides a process for them to make claims in court. But there had been no such order issued in the area of Texas that covers Bluebonnet, which is 24 miles north of Abilene in the far northern end of the state. U.S. District Judge James Wesley Hendrix, a Trump appointee, this week declined to bar the administration from removing the two men identified in the ACLU lawsuit because Immigration and Customs Enforcement filed sworn declarations that they would not be immediately deported. He also balked at issuing a broader order prohibiting removal of all Venezuelans in the area under the act because he said removals hadn’t started yet. Hamas has signaled to Arab mediators its willingness to enter into a long-term truce with Israel — one that would halt military operations, including the development of weapons and construction of tunnels — as part of a comprehensive ceasefire agreement, according to reports. The proposal, conveyed last week, marks the most far-reaching position publicly attributed to Hamas since the start of the war in Gaza. The terms, as relayed to The Times of Israel by a senior Palestinian official and an Arab diplomat involved in the mediation, include a multi-year truce lasting five, 10, or even 15 years, contingent upon a broader deal to end the war. Under the proposal, Hamas said it is willing to relinquish governing control of the Gaza Strip in favor of an independent technocratic authority — a framework that aligns with Egyptian plans for Gaza’s postwar administration. Furthermore, some Hamas representatives have indicated readiness to place the group’s weapons under guard in a secure warehouse, a gesture meant to reinforce its commitment to ending military activity against Israel. The suggested framework also includes the release of all remaining Israeli hostages in a single phase, in exchange for the release of a negotiated number of Palestinian prisoners. Some of Netanyahu’s political opponents have argued that the release of hostages should take precedence, even if it means postponing the goal of toppling Hamas. Rep. Jamie Raskin issued a pointed warning to international leaders who have aligned themselves with President Trump on controversial policies such as deportations, stating that Democrats won’t forget their cooperation and will respond accordingly when they return to power.

Speaking specifically about El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele, Raskin (D-Md.), 62, implied that Democrats should take note of foreign leaders who cozy up to Trump during his second term. “Implicit in it should be the idea that if and when we come back to power — and we will — we are not going to look kindly upon people who … facilitated authoritarianism in our country,” Raskin said during an episode of “Pod Save America” that aired Saturday, hosted by Tommy Vietor.

Vietor had mentioned that a Latin America specialist recommended Democrats consider punitive measures against any foreign governments involved in the extraordinary rendition of U.S. citizens.

Trump has invoked powers under the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to expedite the deportation of suspected gang members, bypassing typical legal procedures, and transferring them to El Salvador’s high-security Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT).

Though these deportations have so far involved individuals without legal status, Trump has hinted that he is reviewing the legality of deporting American citizens deemed dangerously violent to overseas detention facilities.

Raskin applauded the notion of confronting such international cooperation and urged lawmakers to consider pulling financial aid from El Salvador in light of its role in these deportations. “The whole idea that Bukele doesn’t have any power to return an American prisoner who was sent to him under an agreement where he’s getting paid $6 million by America is ridiculous,” Raskin said. “He’s our legal agent in this dubious arrangement they created. Of course, he’s got the power to return them.”

President Bukele recently visited the White House for a meeting with Trump, becoming the first Latin American leader to do so. When asked about the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia to the U.S., Bukele called such questions “preposterous” and claimed he had no authority to reverse the deportation.

Abrego Garcia, a 29-year-old Salvadoran national, had illegally entered the U.S. in 2011. A 2019 court ruling blocked his deportation due to the threat of gang violence in his home country. Nonetheless, the Trump administration sent him back to El Salvador last month. Officials initially labeled the move an “error,” but later defended it, alleging connections between Abrego Garcia and MS-13—a claim his attorneys and family strongly dispute.

Raskin went on to say that Democrats must do more to build what he called “transnational Democrat solidarity,” aimed at combating what he described as the rise of global authoritarianism and political chaos. He stressed the need to push back against what he sees as Trump’s erosion of democratic norms.

As ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, Raskin has been one of Trump’s most outspoken opponents in Congress. He previously played a key role in defending Hunter Biden during Republican-led investigations.

A former professor of constitutional law, Raskin argued, “We’re living in something like a gangster state right now.”

“We have to stop that, obviously, to prevent a slide into complete dictatorship,” he said, criticizing the administration’s use of foreign detention arrangements.

He then posed a rhetorical question, saying, “Donald Trump is a convicted criminal. Could he be sent off to a foreign prison?”

Raskin concluded by calling for a sweeping grassroots movement to fight back against what he sees as America’s drift toward fascism. “We’ve got to become the leaders of a nationwide popular movement to arrest the descent into fascism in America,” he said, before pivoting to criticize tech moguls like Elon Musk and their supporters in Silicon Valley.

“These people really believe that democracy is defunct. They say we live in a constitutional America,” Raskin remarked with evident frustration.

A U.S. official confirmed that at a point during the negotiations in Rome, President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi spoke face to face. Before they meet again in Oman on April 26, Araghchi said technical-level talks would be held in the coming days. That experts would be discussing details of a possible deal suggests movement in the talks and comes as Trump has pushed for a rapid agreement while threatening military action against Iran. The sides “made very good progress in our direct and indirect discussions,” according to a senior Trump administration official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss a private diplomatic meeting. In a post on X, Araghchi similarly said they made “progress on principles and objectives of a possible deal.” He added, however, that “optimism may be warranted but only with a great deal of caution.” He told Iranian state television earlier that “I hope that we will be in a better position after the technical talks.” While the U.S. said both direct and indirect discussions were held, Iranian officials described them as indirect, like those last weekend in Muscat, Oman, with Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi shuttling between them in different rooms. “These talks are gaining momentum and now even the unlikely is possible,” al-Busaidi said on X. Trabelsi, who was raised and educated within the institutions of Kisei Rachamim from a young age, documented the tearful procession with deep emotion. Throughout the levayah, overwhelmed by the loss of his revered rebbi, he broke down in tears multiple times.

His footage offers a raw, heartfelt glimpse into the pain and reverence felt by thousands who came to accompany the rosh yeshiva on his final journey.

A major decision regarding the future of the Keren Olam HaTorah may be imminent, it has emerged, after a visit by Rav Aviezer Piltz, Rosh Yeshivas Tifrach, to the home of Maran Rav Moshe Hillel Hirsch, Rosh Yeshivas Slabodka.

During the visit, which took place over Pesach, Rav Piltz is seen expressing deep gratitude to Rav Hirsch for his pivotal role in establishing Keren Olam HaTorah, a fund that has supported the financial stability of the Israeli Torah world over the past year.

Rav Hirsch shared that the original fundraising campaign was only intended to cover one year, and the funds are nearly depleted. He revealed that he is currently weighing whether and how to launch another campaign for the upcoming year.

The fund was created about a year ago in response to a wave of severe financial decrees that threatened the sustainability of kollelim and yeshivos. At that time, Rav Hirsch spearheaded an international campaign to raise desperately needed funds, joined by leading gedolim including Rav Dov Landau, the Vizhnitzer and Rachmastrivka Rebbes, Rav Dovid Cohen, Rav Yitzchok Hillel, Rav Shimon Galei, Rav Avraham Salim, Rav Yitzchok Chevroni, and others.

The initial campaign was met with tremendous success and is credited with helping countless Torah institutions survive a difficult year. Now, the Torah world eagerly awaits Rav Hirsch’s decision, which is expected to be announced ahead of the summer zman.

In addition to the discussion about the fund, the visit included a fascinating exchange between the two roshei yeshiva. Rav Piltz recounted a remarkable anecdote from Rav Hirsch’s youth, when the young Moshe Hillel was a talmid of Rav Aharon Kotler zt”l in Lakewood. During a particularly complex shiur, Rav Hirsch raised a sharp question that sparked a debate with Rav Aharon. After hearing the argument, Rav Aharon reportedly said, “He’s right.”

To illustrate the depth of Rav Aharon Kotler’s shiurim, Rav Piltz added that Rav Isser Zalman Meltzer, the famed gaon of Volozhin and Rav Aharon’s father-in-law, used to place a wet towel on his head to maintain focus during Rav Aharon’s intense shiurim.

In the halls of the yeshiva world, all eyes are now on Rav Moshe Hillel Hirsch as he considers whether to extend the life-saving Keren Olam HaTorah for another year, a decision that may shape the future of countless Torah institutions across Eretz Yisroel.

A heavy cloud of mourning has descended upon the Torah world with the passing of HaGaon HaRav Meir Mazuz zt”l, Rosh Yeshivas Kisei Rachamim in Bnei Brak, a towering figure in the Sephardic Torah world and one of its most revered and uncompromising voices.

Rav Mazuz was hospitalized in recent days, and his condition deteriorated significantly just before his petirah on Shabbos, the seventh day of Pesach. He was 80 years old.

Born on the 13th of Nissan in 1945 in Tunisia, Rav Mazuz was the son of Rav Matzliach Mazuz zt”l, a leading figure in Tunisian Jewry and the founder of Yeshivas Kisei Rachamim.

From a young age, Rav Meir demonstrated brilliance in Torah and began teaching early on. After the tragic murder of his father, Rav Mazuz immigrated to Eretz Yisroel and, alongside his brothers, reestablished the yeshiva in Bnei Brak.

Under his leadership, Yeshivas Kisei Rachamim flourished into a powerhouse of Sephardic Torah learning, comprising a vast network of preschools, elementary and high schools, yeshivos ketanos and gedolos, and kollelim across Eretz Yisroel. Thousands of talmidim passed through its doors, imbibing his deep Torah knowledge, clarity in halachah, and commitment to mesorah.

Throughout the years, Rav Mazuz was never afraid to speak his mind. During the Gush Katif disengagement, he publicly protested and joined a letter supporting the ruling of the Rabbinical Council of Yesha, which called on soldiers to refuse orders that contradicted the Torah.

In 2015, ahead of the 20th Knesset elections, Rav Mazuz was recognized as the spiritual guide of the newly formed Yachad party led by Eli Yishai, though the party did not pass the electoral threshold. In subsequent elections, he continued to voice support for Otzma Yehudit, and more recently, expressed backing for both Shas and Otzma Yehudit.

The news of his passing elicited a wave of sorrow and hespeidim from across the Israeli rabbinic and political spectrum.

National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir expressed deep sorrow, saying, “I begin the week with great pain over the passing of Maran HaRav Meir Mazuz zt”l. I merited to have a close connection with him, to receive his blessings, and to hear his sage advice. His powerful, unwavering voice, his psakim, and his spiritual legacy will continue to guide us for many years. I join in mourning with his family, his talmidim, and all of Klal Yisroel. Minister of Culture and Sport Miki Zohar described the loss as “a great tragedy for the Jewish people. Rav Mazuz – one of the leading Rabbanim of our generation – was a figure of Torah, humility, and Jewish pride. I was privileged to meet him, to be inspired by his character, and to receive his blessings. He was a clear voice of tradition and wisdom, conveying rare depth and sincerity. Yehi zichro baruch.”

Interior Minister Moshe Arbel also paid tribute: “With deep sorrow, I part from the great gaon, HaRav Meir Mazuz zt”l. In our final meeting just two weeks ago, he fondly recalled the days when I had the privilege of learning Torah in his home more than two decades ago. His towering spiritual presence will be deeply missed by the Torah world and all who cherished his teachings. Yehi zichro baruch.”

Finance Minister and leader of the Religious Zionist Party Bezalel Smotrich wrote: “Together with the entire House of Israel, I mourn the passing of the gaon HaRav Meir Mazuz zt”l. Rav Mazuz was a leader of Sephardic Jewry and one of the gedolei haTorah of our time. With his vast Torah knowledge and profound humility, he guided tens of thousands from across the spectrum of Klal Yisroel.”

The Chief Rabbi of Israel and President of the Chief Rabbinical Council, HaRav Kalman Meir Bar, shared a heartfelt hesped: “The Rosh Yeshiva zt”l was a symbol of diligence and love for Torah. Every moment of his time was devoted to deep Torah learning and halachic clarity. For decades, he raised thousands of talmidim in his holy yeshiva and in batei midrash across the country who remain loyal to his teachings and uphold his legacy.

“Rav Mazuz zt”l was a beacon of ahavas Yisroel, embracing every Jew regardless of background. He fiercely defended the sanctity and integrity of Eretz Yisroel, standing strong against any attempt to compromise its holiness or wholeness.

“His passing is a tremendous loss for the entire Jewish people, for the thousands of talmidim who followed his path, and for his illustrious family. His shiurim, halachic rulings, pure hashkafah, and meticulous approach to tefillah will remain an eternal testimony to his name until the coming of Moshiach.”
